connecting nodes to each other
WHY: sometimes I want to show a connection between other nodes than the parent/sibling/child nodes
the first version of this is live now. See http://blog.mindmup.com/p/custom-links-between-nodes.html for more info. Touch devices aren’t yet fully supported, we’re working on that. If this turns out to be useful and popular, we’ll probably extend it with arrows, line types etc. Let us know what you think about it on this forum.

we weren't really sure how to hotkey it. the current idea is to use L to start a link, then move around with the keyboard and use L again to complete the link. This isn't that difficult, but hotkeys get trickier for setting link properties, as there isn't an easy way to decide which link to apply it to. If anyone has a suggestion, that would be great.

Sweet. Any way to hotkey this? Thx a bunch.

YES please. Glad this is on the way. :)

Annamari, multi-root maps are unrelated to the discussion thread. I propose you add that as a separate idea so that people can vote on it. We won't build multi-root maps as part of this thread.

Could be a sequence, could be separate from the hierarchy - ideally totally flexible! Right now I'm wanting to have a group of child nodes connect to a new idea, in effect a second parent node which is completely divorced from the first parent, i.e. should be located e.g. on the other side of the child nodes. So, not only a new type of connection but also requires flexibility to group together a set of nodes and connect them to a new node, potentially to be eventually linked back to previous nodes.

On my previous comment.

When both nodes of the connection line are moved or copied simultaneously,
the connection line is also moved or copied . -

this connection is most of time directional; use of arrow is preferable indeed

I think the type of line that is different from the line between parents and children s is preferable.(Dotted line, for example)
-
Hans (and others), is this connection directional - is it important to differentiate from and to? (eg arrow). Source-of, consequence-of relationships tend to be directional.

My idea is as follow.
- this connection line is independent of the structure of the map.
- this connection line is a comment just ancillary.
- just draw a connection line between two nodes simply visual.
- you can write some comments on the line.
- In case of move or copy of the node, this connection line is irrelevant. -

I'd choose a different look
-
so should this connection look like another parent child connector, or does it need to look different to signify the different relationship?
-
Hans Vandeveire commented
@Munetaka - in FreeMind (offline installation software) it is possible by multiselecting two nodes and CTRL+L (a link is shown) or ALT+L (a hyperlink to the node is shown)

Do you have an example of such a connection in other mind mapping tool?

I see it as a way to show a connection between nodes; not in a hierarchic way;
the connection can have different meanings ('related to', 'consequence of', 'source of', 'to deal together with', ...)
Changing positions should result in keeping the link.
Exporting to text... no idea how that connection should be shown though :-/ -
This seems to be getting votes, so let's discuss it a bit more... What do you want to show with this? Is this a sequence of things, separate from the hierarchy, or is it something else?
