move the bubble somewhere else and it doesn't pop back
I'm used to mind manager when you move your ideas somewhere and it stays there, in mindmup it pops back which is quite annoying to me.
This is now available at www.mindmup.com, see an example at:
http://blog.mindmup.com/2013/09/use-shiftdrag-to-manually-position-nodes.html
We’d love to hear your feedback on the solution, please let us know by sending an e-mail to contact@mindmup.com or leaving a comment here.

Drag-selection would solve the problem of child movement. The default would be: only move those nodes which are selected, but allow arbitrary selection. If you have a complex hierarchy and don't want to select them all to move them, just collapse some nodes first, them move them, then expand them again.

There could be also an option to choose 8 ways direction where the node will go: left-up-right-down and diagonally between.
Could work like that:
User holds TAB and choose direction with arrow keys. -

This would give the opportunity to "organize" the map better, cluster things together that I feel go together. The automatic layout creates long horizontal (stretched) maps if you have few siblings.

I m not used to this kind of applications so I don't really know how it would be better.
I think when I would move a node it should move all the childs too.
The user might want organize nodes around parent node or under or some other way. So not all the nodes will be a list after parent node.
But on the other side I realize it will require much more filesize and maybe much harder calculations. -
Arseniy - when you say move far away, is that far away from the other nodes in the map, or far away from the other siblings? Eg do we keep the position relative to the center of the map, or it's parent?

It should not follow the parent, if I want it to follow, I should just select parent and child together and drag, that way I have much more freedom. one situation I must need this is that when you have thousands of nodes, you're most likely want to quickly move part of your network somewhere just to get an idea for what nodes should be together and others should be together in another area, and not able to move them away will really be a pain in a more complex network.
nevertheless when I create nodes it's very exploratory, I tend to move them all around and then later organize them. -

It's okay idea. Sometimes moving the blocks to the desired postions just helps to remember better, because it's more unique structure and also better for the taste of different person's eye.
Might be usefull sometimes.
For example there can be some thing I would want to move far away. -
people who are voting for this one... can you please put a bit more info on what this would help with. What would you be able to achieve by moving a node to a fixed position? What would that show on the map? Is this a workaround for a problem with the automatic layout, or does it give you something more conceptually that automatic layout does not?

Shift+Drag&Drop creates a copy.
you move your ideas somewhere and it stays there.

For me automatic layout is a plus as well. If the idea gets implemented I hope there will be a preference setting to switch it off and on.

to me to current automatic layout is a plus: when dragging to another position everything follows automatically; I can think of only one little advantage of your idea: sometimes you would like a different position for layout reasons when exporting to a .png

Hi,
We're looking into good ways of doing this, so it would be great to get a bit more info on what you expect to achieve with this - not as a software feature but more the benefit you expect to get from it. What would this enable you to do that current automatic layout does not? What would make it better? Also, once a node is dragged into a position, would you expect it to stay there even if a parent moves, or should it follow the parent?
