    This could be implemented with the suggested metadata feature (http://mindmup.uservoice.com/forums/200447-what-should-we-focus-on-next-/suggestions/4593361-associating-metadata-with-nodes-to-enable-linear-s) and an ability to hide a node if the 'layer' property is set to some value.

    Treebolic appears to just show the distance as (reverse) hyperbolic. It would seem that what is desired would be more like a fish-eye lens. What is farther from the current node is not only packed more closely but also smaller. Thus, it would give the normal appearance of being farther away.
